Résumé : La chirurgie des troubles oculomoteurs est en partie, et fort heureusement, une chirurgie "esthétique". Il est reconnu qu'elle est une chirurgie fonctionnelle des troubles de la vision binoculaire et monoculaire. C'est encore beaucoup plus. A l'aide d'exemples, nous verrons que la chirurgie oculomotrice est de plus une chirurgie fonctionnelle en ce qui concerne les rapports des yeux et du corps. Toute anomalie de position des yeux entraîne une anomalie de position du corps, une attitude anormale qui retentit sur le développement d'un tout petit, sur l'adresse, le confort, la séduction, les possibilités de travail à tout âge, sur la recherche d'un emploi chez l'adulte. Nous verrons que la chirurgie oculomotrice est également une chirurgie fonctionnelle du mal d'être. Elle peut transformer la vie en soulageant les souffrances d'un loucheur, petit ou grand, devant le regard des autres. Tout ophtalmologiste doit, d'emblée avoir une vue d'ensemble de son patient qui orientera le diagnostic. Le traitement chirurgical qui en découle transformera non seulement l'attitude du patient, son regard, mais aussi son comportement sous le regard des autres.

Summary : One of the advantages of surgery in response to oculomotor problems is that, to some extent, it is purely aesthetic in purpose. That oculomotor surgery aims to correct binocular and monocular difficulties in vision is widely recognised. There is more to it that this, however. With the help of a number of examples it will be seen that oculomotor surgery has a functional role to play concerning relations between the body and the eyes. Any abnomaly in eye's position gives rise to an anomaly in the position of the body and abnormal posture with a direct impact on an infant's development and at all ages on dexterity, comfort, physical attractiveness, work and on the ability to find work. It will also be seen that oculomotor surgery has a functional role to fulfil at a psychological level. It can transform an individual's live by relieving distress associated with other people's reaction to a squint, whether it be large or small. Hence, when considering a patient, an ophthalmologist must necessarily adopt a global perspective influencing the diagnosis he or she comes to. The surgery subsequently undertaken will transform not only the patient's general attitude, his or her vision, but also his or her reaction to the vision that other's have of the patient.
